Smartphone-compatible Hearing Aids: Are They the Right Choice?

We live in an increasingly interconnected world, so why should your hearing aids be any different? Smartphone-compatible hearing aids are the latest technological advancement that allows you to transmit audio directly from your phone, tablet, or laptop to your hearing aids. Additionally, today’s hearing aids can be adjusted with your cell phone, allowing you to change settings for volume, listening environment, and more, without having to find and manipulate tiny controls on the hearing aids themselves.

Benefits of Smartphone-compatible Hearing Aids

Smartphone-Compatible Hearing Aids provides a range of benefits:

  • Stay Connected

Smartphone-compatible hearing aids can connect directly to a wide range of devices without any intermediate gadgets like neck loops or TV boxes. This means you can use them to stream music, make phone calls, and watch TV, without making complicated connections or spending additional money. Furthermore, you will no longer have to manually switch between devices, allowing you a smoother listening experience.

  • Interactive Technology

Hearing aids compatible with cell phones enable an optimized listening experience by detecting and analyzing environments and quickly adjusting the sound to maximize intelligibility. This can be done automatically, or the wearer can use the cell phone to modify sound for specific situations.

  • Ease of Use

Smart hearing aids are relatively easy to use. Anyone who can use a smartphone can also operate a modern hearing aid. Nearly all hearing aid functions can be automated, with the user required to do nothing more than insert the best hearing aids into the ears. Conversely, those who desire more control over what they hear have an easier time than ever before, with large, clear, and easy-to-operate controls on the cell phone screen.

  • Easy to Find If They Get Misplaced

The newest generation GPS tracking system in smartphone hearing aids can help track their location without having to physically search the house, car, etc.

Can I Get Hearing Aids That Are Compatible with Android or iPhone?

Until quite recently, it was best to choose a brand of hearing aid based at least partly upon compatibility with your particular brand of cell phone, as hearing aid brands were generally optimised for either Apple or Android. This is becoming less true now, with many major brands working quite well with either. It is a good topic to discuss with your audiologist, however, to ensure that your hearing aids will work perfectly with your preferred cell phone.

A Guide to Connecting Hearing Aids with Your Smartphone

How can you set your mobile phone up to be used with your hearing aids? Here is a basic guide:

  • Step 1. Download the hearing aid app. Each hearing aid manufacturer has an app that is designed specifically for use with their hearing aids.
  • Step2. Make sure your hearing aids have fresh batteries or, in the case of rechargeable hearing aids, are fully charged. It usually is best to either turn the hearing aids off or place them into their charger.
  • Step 3. Make sure Bluetooth is turned on by going to "Settings" and "Bluetooth" on your phone.
  • Step 4. Close the battery doors, or remove the hearing aids from the charger, to start your hearing aids and enable detection by your phone. To manually configure them, go to the Bluetooth settings and seek your hearing aid's name and model number. It should be included under "Paired Devices".
  • Step 5. To finalize the connection to each hearing aid, tap its name, and you should be connected.

Bear in mind that this is a general description, and some brands and models may have specific requirements not mentioned here. Your audiologist should be happy to assist you with the task and answer any questions.
